Planning - Schedules

Schedule

Below is the schedule for vital elements of the music video and ancillary tasks that need to be established and created. This schedule includes the date in which each piece of work should be finished by. By doing a schedule it gives us something to work towards and keeps us up to date together with our work.

Below is the schedule for our filming and photo shoot days. It also includes when certain parts of our ancillary should be finished by as well:

Planning - Story Board - Introduction

Introductory Scene

For the introductory scene I and my group decided that we shall use stop motion. The stop motion will be of scrabble pieces on a wooden table. The Scrabble pieces will be scattered across the table and slow build up to spell the words ' Plain White T's' and 'Hey There Delilah'. This section of the footage should take up to 9 seconds of the music video. During this time in the background is the sound of a guitar playing without singing. For this section I think it will be necessary to take between 60-95 photos.

Planning - Choosing a Style Guide

'All That We Needed' choosing font/chosen font
As a group we needed to decide what font 'All That We Needed' the band name would be in. However when we were experimenting with fonts we originally were having the album name as 'Hey There Delilah' which is why these fonts are based on that song title. The typeface for this album name would be the same as for the 'Plain White T's' to create consistency and a professional look to our promotional package. However there will be different elements and effects done on the band’s name to the album name to differentiate them. Below are the fonts we researched and tried out:

We then as a group narrowed it down to two different fonts that we thought stood out best and reflected the genre the most. These fonts were 'Poor Richard' and 'Pristina.' We decided to see how the font would look in a smaller font, encase we wished to use it for the song lyrics text, it was clear that Poor Richard was easier to read and looked much neater and effective.

Therefore our chosen typeface for 'All That We Needed' and 'Plain White T's' is Poor Richard.

These are the items that we came up with when trying to choose are style guide and having a meeting to choose it.

Planning - Hey There Delilah Mood Board

This is the mood board which me and my group put together with things that we believed are representative of the genre, the song and the band.

Some of the pictures such as the scrabble pieces and the trains were ideas that we believed we could use for the production of the music video that we are creating for the project. The scrabble pieces gave us the idea to use stop motion to build the name of the band and the song for an introduction and the train photos gave us the idea of part of the plot to our story.

We also put down words that we associated with the song such as 'seperation' and  'Wishes'. WE also included pictures that we associated with the genre such as crying, the rain and the motif that we are planning on using as a red symbol throughout the music video.

Below is the mood board that me and my group designed and created:

Research - Song Lyrics

INTRO

VERSE 1
D           Bm
Hey there Delilah,  What’s it like in New York City?
D       Bm
I’m a thousand miles away,  But girl tonight you look so pretty,
  G          A         Bm A
Yes you do,  Time Square can’t shine as bright as you,  I swear it’s true.
D           Bm
Hey there Delilah,  Don’t you worry about the distance,
D                  Bm
I’m right there if you get lonely,  Give this song another listen,
              G                  A   Bm             A
Close your eyes,  Listen to my voice it’s my disguise, I’m by your side.

CHORUS
D                 Bm      D                  Bm
Oh it’s what you do to me,  Oh it’s what you do to me,
Oh it’s what you do to me, Oh it’s what you do to me, What you do to me.

VERSE 2
D           Bm
Hey there Delilah,  I know times are getting hard,
D                                          Bm
But just believe me girl some day,  I'll pay the bills with this guitar,
                                      G          A         Bm A
We'll have it good,  We'll have the life we knew we would, My word is good.
D           Bm
Hey there Delilah,  I’ve got so much left to say,
D                         Bm
If every simple song I wrote to you, Would take your breath away,
                             G          A                      Bm               A
I’d write it all,  Even more in love with me you’d fall,  We’d have it all.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
G                                          A
A thousand miles seems pretty far, But they’ve got planes, trains and cars,
D                                 Bm
I’d walk to you if I had no other way.
G                                          A
Our friends would all make fun of us,  And we'll just laugh along because,
D                                         Bm
We know that none of them have felt this way,
G                 A
Delilah I can promise you, That by the time that we get through,
D                                 Bm                        A
The world will never ever be the same ..... And you’re to blame!

VERSE 3
D           Bm
Hey there Delilah you be good,  And don’t you miss me,
           D                                                   Bm
Two more years and you’ll be done with school,  And I'll be making history,
         G             A           Bm
Like I do, You’ll know it's all because of you,
G     A             Bm
We can do whatever we want to
G             A              Bm                   A
Hey there Delilah here's to you, This one’s for you.

CHORUS (again)

Research - Reason For Song Choice

Hey There Delilah - Plain White T's

The chosen band and song to base our music video around is the band the 'Plain White T's' and their song 'Hey There Delilah'.

The are many reasons behind the choice of the song. The first being the popularity of the genre/sub genre. Due to the song and band being incorporated within three genres/sub genres, that being 'Alternate-Rock', 'Pop' and mainly 'Pop-Rock'. This allows us to attract three different audience groups which would increase the popularity and audience appreciation of the video itself.

The second reason being that the props needed such as a guitar and the clothes that can be indentified with the genre that being an 'indie' style, I and the rest of my team members already obtain.

This will make filming more effective and attractive to the audience through the appliance of gaze theory. It will also mean that the group will not have to waste time when trying to get the props as we have them already and this time is invaluable and can be used for other aspects of the project.

The third reason being that I and another member of our team are able to play the song 'Hey There Delilah' on the guitar. This is a big advantage as when filming this means we will be able to sync the playing with the sound of the song being played. This will make it look realistic and as though the person is actually playing the song. It also means that we will have a lead actor who is already part of the project and takes out the need for searching for a lead actor that would have the time to give up.

Research - Choosing a Song

Having decided the band that we were going to use it was now time to choose a specific song that fit the 'Pop-Rock' genre and we felt would be best for the overall project and final production. We had three songs of choice from the 'Plain White T's'

  1. 1, 2, 3, 4
  2. Hey There Delilah
  3. Lazy Day Afternoon
After considering all three songs the group finally decided on choosing 'Hey There Delilah' for the music video that we would try to create for our project.

Research - Specific Genre

Once looking at the three genres with my group we came to the conclusion that the sub genre 'Pop-Rock' would be the genre that would be able to portray best through a music video due to our knowledge and understanding of the sub genre. Therefore we narrowed it down to three individual bands that we thought would be suitable to create with the equipment that we could use and be effective. These three bands were the 'Plain White T's', 'You Me At Six' and 'Paramore'.

Therefore I decided to look at a music video from each of the bands and choose one of the bands at the end, which I and the group felt would not only be effective for us to portray but one that would gain the interest which would be needed to put in the effort that is necessary to complete the project.

You Me At Six : Reckless

Paramore : The Only Exception

Plain White T's : 1, 2, 3, 4

After watching the three videos with my group, we came to the conclusion that we would not only enjoy making a 'Plain White T's' music but felt that we would be able to capture and demonstrate this style of music video/sub genre with the equipment available and the time that we had allocated.
